5th July 2011 - I Need a Beer!

We pull into Limehouse lock having come down from Teddington this morning on the 0600 tide, my heart is at about 200! I'm in and have managed not to hit anything, wow! what a ride! It's 1000 and I'm having a beer.

Here's some pictures of the trip down:

The welcome sight of Limehouse lock:

The weather was great, the tide looked to be very fast, there seemed to be a lot of rubbish in the water, I was really annoyed at Victoria rail bridge, a steam locomotive was going across, another 5 minutes and we'd have had a photo, all we could see was the smoke!

It's much better going this way, all the good stuff is at the end of the trip! The waves between London and Tower bridges were 2 - 3 feet, our front door mat is soaking, we must have taken a couple through the drain holes. The turn and entry to Limehouse is every bit as nerve wracking as the descriptions by those that have gone before! I loved it!

Limehouse lockie gave me a couple of tips for next time, oh yes there will be a next time! I must turn later and tune to VHF 80 at Tower Bridge. I will remember this!

Tied up in the basin, sat on roof in sunshine reliving the last few moments, I said to Dave "lets have a beer"

We chilled for a couple of hours, then went to Greenwich for a wander about, nothing much doing. Then we went to the London Docklands museum, it was all about the history of London, the river and the docks, then and now. It was really interesting. Then to Tesco for a few bits and return to boat to find yet more of my cratch cover stitching going to pieces! As soon as it stops raining me and Dave are going to have to effect some more temporary repairs. Now, where's the Indian restaurant?

Today:   21 miles -     2 locks -     4 hours
So Far: 395 miles - 298 locks - 191 hours

  1. It was the 'Veranda' about 5 minutes walk away, a very nice, but tad pricy meal.

I've been talking to a guy called Wilson on NB Melanie. He's set on betting Tower Bridge to open for him. He's jury rigged a 10 metre wooden mast and booked the bridge! The marine police have been here talking to him, he locked out onto the river earlier today, apparently the bridge wouldn't open for him, but he's been told it's opening for another vessel tomorrow if he wants to follow it through! You've got to admire his resolve!
